General feeding information

  • Never walk your dog and then let it come in and immediately have its meal, or vice versa.
  • Always allow around 1–1½ hours between exercise and food or vice versa.
  • Do not mix vitamin or mineral supplements with your dog's meals unless directed to do so by a vet.

Snacks and dog treats

Any dog treats are acceptable -IN MODERATION.

Don't forget that your puppy's meals are more important for it's growth and development than snacks or treats. Use treats as a reward for doing something right, or during play. Try not to simply hand out treats for nothing. The puppy can earn them -even if it's only by sitting quietly and waiting while you unwrap a treat.

If your puppy starts to reject his food, cut out all treats until you have sorted out the main meals. Then reintroduce them. If you give too many treats your puppy will begin to prefer these to its main food, and may become a picky eater. Do your best not to let this happen.

Feeding guide

Age of dog Mealtimes

Quantity of food required

8-10 weeks Morning ¼ of a 1-litre measuring jug of Pro Plan Puppy and mix in 1 heaped dessert spoon of fresh or canned meat
Midday ¼ of a 1-litre measuring jug of Pro Plan Puppy and mix in 1 heaped dessert spoon of fresh or canned meat
Evening ¼ of a 1-litre measuring jug of Pro Plan Puppy and mix in 1 heaped dessert spoon of fresh or canned meat

10-12 weeks Morning ⅓ of a 1-litre measuring jug of Pro Plan Puppy and mix in 1 heaped tablespoon of fresh or canned meat
Midday ⅓ of a 1-litre measuring jug of Pro Plan Puppy and mix in 1 heaped tablespoon of fresh or canned meat
Evening ⅓ of a 1-litre measuring jug of Pro Plan Puppy and mix in 1 heaped tablespoon of fresh or canned meat

12-16 weeks Morning ¾ of a 1-litre measuring jug of Pro Plan Puppy and mix in 2 heaped tablespoons of fresh or canned meat
Midday At 12 weeks your puppy no longer needs lunch. You can give a couple of Bonio biscuits but this is not essential, particularly if you are already using biscuits as a training aid or reward
Evening ¾ of a 1-litre measuring jug of Pro Plan Puppy and mix in 2 heaped tablespoons of fresh or canned meat

16-26 weeks Morning ⅞–1 of a 1-litre measuring jug of Pro Plan Puppy and mix in 2 heaped tablespoons of fresh or canned meat
Evening ⅞–1 of a 1-litre measuring jug of Pro Plan Puppy and mix in 2 heaped tablespoons of fresh or canned meat

over 26 weeks Morning ⅞–1 of a 1-litre measuring jug of Pro Plan Adult and mix in 2 heaped tablespoons of fresh or canned meat
Evening ⅞–1 of a 1-litre measuring jug of Pro Plan Adult and mix in 2 heaped tablespoons of fresh or canned meat
A full 1-litre measuring jug of Pro Plan Adult twice daily will be sufficient for your dog as he/she grows. There is no need to increase it further. You want a dog with good bone and muscle development - you do not want fat. If your pup starts to get a very portly tum - reduce the feed slightly. Females may need to have their feed reduced slightly from around 9-10 months old, back to ¾ of a jug, because they are slightly smaller than males and do not need to eat quite as much. You must decide this for yourself, or bring the pup back for a visit and we'll be happy to advise you.

Please remember that Pro Plan is one of the best complete foods you can buy in this country. Therefore you are only giving some meat in order to give variation for the dog, and add a bit of interest each day. Do not increase the meat amount.

As Pro Plan is a complete food you do not need to add any vitamin or mineral supplements at all at any age in your dog's development unless you are specifically instructed to do so by a veterinary surgeon. An overload of vitamins and minerals, particularly calcium, can cause more harm than good to a growing youngster of a giant breed - SO BE WARNED!!
